  • Chapter 1

    Creation. Protection. Hope. Love.

    Defense. Correction. Insight. Acceptance.

Swirling colors in spirals, twin's stand in the vortex. One is dark, with reds and beautiful changes in her complexion. She is sultry, strong, stoic and earthy. The second is light, off white with dark color tracings along her well curved masks. She is sensual, smooth, lithe and airy.

Their hands dance. Eyes glazed, they don't seem to see, but move in mirrored unison. The dark bears a wound of fair size. The light has a back exposed by thin cuts, as though paper had shredded it for her. Neither seems to react to their own pain.

But as they touch each seems to scream and react to the others pain, though no noise can be heard as earth and air begin to move together.

The Dark is in pain, earth moves for her. A prison of rock encases a person, so delicate looking that he should shatter it with a finger, but as drags him more to the vortex, the netting of stone thickens while never preventing the person from seeing what is happening. He wields a spear, a look of lust and dominion on his face, even as the thin, fibrous marble weaves around him stronger and stronger. He continues to ignore his surroundings, and paces towards the Dark with a look of twisted desire, dominion, obsession on his face.

The Light recognizes and hisses at the imprisoned one. From the sky comes cloud, another prison. A prison of cold, wet, ice and wind. It breaks and another man drops down. This one looks like the first, but younger, stronger. He seems ignorant of the blue spread on his skin, the color change from his chocolate tone. He gazes at the Light, his frostbite unfelt as his desire burns inside.

The Second and First don't see each other. Each is one the wrong side of the twins. The First stalks to the Dark, the Second toward the Light. The vortex intensifies, colors spiraling out to the prisoners. Clouded wind still entangles the Second, stone continues to surround the First.

The twins grip, neither looks away from the other. The pain in their faces increase as the Fist throws his spear, and produces another. It strikes the Dark, and the Light screams, and audible sound now, but while she writhes, the Dark holds her up.

Strength recovered, the colors begin to shift. The Dark and Light begin to mix. Light grows wings of fearsome size and scale, black and riddled with reflections, fragmented light. Dark grows claws, long, sharp and white, blackened tips of infused metal.

The twins break their hold at this time. Each turns to their respective prisoners. Light is surrounded by Darks energy, colors and tendrils swirling so fast and powerful that her image is completely inverted. Dark is standing so strong that Lights powers are bleeding from her, covering the ground in front of her in color. The weight of that color is apparent. And dangerous.

The First looks not at the ground, but walks in his ever growing ball of stone netting. The stone begins to color. Red. Blood. He is cutting himself with each step on the sharp stone. But he doesn't notice, only focuses on his goal in vain. He stops at a great distance and seizes at the color around him. As he does, each strand nimbly evades his grasp. He begins weaving his own, black so black and smooth, a practiced hand, and weaves a net.

The Second doesn't move, but sends out tendrils of grey silk to ensnare the Light. They wrap around, but when nooses tighten, they pass through. Over and over, Light lets the Second ensnare, but they still never hold. Futilely, the Second tries pass after pass, string after string, till he, too, begins to weave a net.

The twins watch the doings, grim determination on each face. For just an instant, as the nets begin to stretch toward them, both faces demonstrate fear. They step back, lean against each other, press together, back to back, hand to hand. One more precious minute. Then suddenly, eyes come into focus, hard, fiery, determined, and ANGRY. They leap apart, bonded by love and sisterhood, and the bond is so strong that even as they move apart for battle, they are one. Dark and Light. Earth and Air. Strong and weak together, pure and dirty as one, and no concern stronger than that for each other.

Anna’s eyes shot open. She was panting hard. She sat up, feeling the headache ebb and the images fade. She shook her head and wondered How much longer will this go on? She looked at the padded floor of the round room she is in; perfectly spherical, but more than that. She knew that beyond the padding in this place were metals and symbols, wires and sorcery, all trying to keep her in place. Trying to prevent what she had just done.

Anna sighed and turned to face the door. Curious how a door had to be shaped to be in this room. It was something she looked at with amusement after each battle. She knew that it was that door that made a weakness in this prison, allowed her contact to her “twin” and to all that they could do together.
She didn’t have to wait long. She never did. The door was yanked open so fast she wondered that the hinges didn’t break. An irate, stern female with cold sea-blue eyes stood there. She jerked her thumb over her shoulder and watched Anna. Anna considered being obstinate today, staying in the room till the sorceress called security or used a power on her. If she used a spell, then Anna would be able to learn it. She shifted her left shoulder and decided that was a bad idea. The sting from the spear striking her “twin” was still hurting. It would take a few days to fade.

Anna sighed again and stood up. She hopped nimbly up to the door. The sorceress instantly clamped a collar around her neck and hit the button on the back to activate it. Anna never told her that the stupid thing didn’t work anymore. As she was led through a maze of white walls, identical doors and empty reception desks, Anna thought back on her life thus far.

She’d been here 4 years. But her condemnation had begun long before that.

When she was 6, she began first grade. Something happened in that classroom that no one would tell her. Anna was a very mature little girl, had absolute control of her body and mind from a young age. She had taught herself to read and rode her bike to school with her Mom every day. Did so in Kindergarten too, and there had never been a complaint about her.

Less than a month into first grade, however, she became a teacher’s worst nightmare. Daily, her mom would receive calls about her, what she’d done, that she needed a change of cloths, or that she was in trouble again. Not four months passed before her Mom decided to pull her out of school. She had never had problems before that, and the school wouldn’t let Mom observe the class to find out WHY her daughter had gone from angel to devil.

After that, she was home schooled. Many thought this would be a poor choice, as the girl already seemed to have social issues. However, it didn’t go as thought. As she grew and was exposed to people of many ages and cultures, rather than being trapped in a single age group, the girl became a master of social situations. By the age of 16 she could get any response she wanted from any person, regardless of age, gender, race or status. She went to high school then, and after one year decided it was dumb and went to college.

Here was where her curse began. Her ability to respond socially and emotionally to people was noticed by the wrong people as well as the right ones. She was approached by shady people, courted by social adepts and many other persons. She remained distant from all, until one day she met her twin…

Anna was rocked from her thoughts by a sharp pain in her side. The sorceress has struck her with her wand. Anna felt the magic try to spread through her circulatory system and pushed it back. This was a daily occurrence. For some reason, the witch never seemed to get tired of it, and couldn’t seem to think of anything else to try. For years, this woman had been trying to get into her head, trying to find out how the bond between Anna and Baine, her twin, worked. She never got past the surface.

The sorceress’s face contorted with rage. She opened a door on the right side of the hall and kinetically threw Anna in. Anna allowed herself to hit the far wall, making noise, but preventing any damage to herself. She slumped to the floor and waited for the door to close. After the lock had clicked, Anna jumped up and sent an electrical wave through the room, shorting out every camera, recording and sensory device in the room. She knew the magical ones were still in place, but they could only sense the magic she used. They couldn’t see or record.

She took the collar off and reached out carefully to her twin. Baine was being led to the round room, and couldn’t talk now. Anna shuddered. This was a cycle they repeated so often they didn’t know anything else anymore. But they were determined to survive. Anna drew back into her memories.

Baine and Anna had been roommates Anna’s second year of college. She’d moved in, not wanting a friend, and Baine hadn’t been much better. They got along fine, both had the same cleanliness habits and were polar opposites in nearly every way. Where Anna was lithe and smooth in her build and movements, Baine was solid and deliberate. Baine loved to ware reds, blacks and earth tones. Anna was all about brights, lights and color contrast. They both were declared beauties, but in such opposite ways that one could never mistake them as sisters.
However, 4 months later, the girls were inseparable. They had long been referring to each other as “my twin” and had shared many things. They had taken on pieces of each others styles, and were easily distinguished as being together. But what few could see was that their minds had begun to blend as well. Even they didn’t realize it. They were opposites there too. Baine was so peace loving and silently stubborn that she would let people walk all over her, but she had a wicked, dirty sense of humor. Anna would still manipulate those around her to do or not do what she wanted, though for the most part all she wanted was to have a social life without any emotional or physical connection.

Because they were always together, people didn’t notice when Baine began saying things that were so manipulative that they should have come from Anna’s mouth, or when Anna made a comment that was too dirty to be her own. The girls themselves noticed the change, and were fine with it.

However, the wrong people began to notice different things. Things the girls were unaware of. Even when physically separate, the girls seemed to do things in unison. They would be across the campus and having separate conversations, and would think something to the other, and the other would respond. Of course, being modern, educated women, they didn’t believe in magic, telepathy, or any such mess. They just chalked it up to knowing each other well and loving each other so much.

This continued for another semester, then the night before finals when both were exhausted and out dancing away their stress at the local dry club, they were stolen away. They had gone to the club as usual, with a close friend whom they’d given the nick-name “bodyguard.” He went everywhere with them, and watched over them carefully, even though he was younger than them. He never took his eyes off of them, and warned off any guys that he sensed had ulterior motives for dancing or offering drinks. And under his watchful eye, they were stolen away. He searched the campus, alerted authorities, and even tried tracking them. But it was all in vain, and the girls were not found.

Baine and Anna still weren’t quite sure how they were removed from the middle of the club, surrounded by people and the center of attention of those people. They did remember the van that had taken them from the club, and the private jet that they were brought on. It was a luxury vehicle, and they had been treated well by the crew, as though they were guests of honor. They were offered every kind of food, drink and luxury. The plane even had a hot tub and a masseuse, but Baine and Anna refused everything but sleep on the whole 15 hour flight. They knew they were prisoners, and didn’t want to touch anything that might be poisoned, tainted, or bugged.

When the plane finally touched down, they were shown off and met by a woman dressed in grey silk, with sea-blue eyes. She had been polite, and had led them to a limousine with creamy leather seats and spoke to them as the car drove away. The landscape was red, dry and dusty. A desert. Anna had marveled at the red soil, and thought it all beautiful, though she wished she could see mountains in the distance like she could at home.

The woman had never given them her name. She simply began as though this was a simple business meeting.

“You two have been selected because you have demonstrated to our scouts an aptitude for the supernatural. We would like to congratulate you, we have rarely found persons with such great abilities as you do…”

Anna was in no mood to be polite. Polite or not, this was kidnapping and against her will, and they had had the nerve to pull Baine in on it too! Both of the girls had enough pain in their lives without this.

“Scouts? Selected? Try kidnapped, brutalized, drugged, no information, all of this is without our consent! This is illegal and TOTALLY not gonna go without a court appeal!”

The woman didn’t seem perturbed. In fact, it seemed like she was amused with it. She replied “We have no obligation to your standard government. As a Sorceress in the Litera Una Order, I am above and beyond any government. And so will you be, when you accept the Litera Una pact.”

“Well what if we don’t WANT to be part of the Literal First?” Anna demanded, translating the name. “What if we want to go back to our lives at college and in the US government…”

“You do not have a choice” The woman said. “That government doesn’t want you back. Every government in the world has come to terms with the Litera Una, and we take all Telepaths, Psychics, Wizards, Sorceresses, Witches, whatever name you want to give it. All supernatural talents, we gather them together to train, to remove the hassle from the countries of the world.” She sighed. “Untrained, these people often cause unneeded trouble for these countries, and even those who realize they are gifted usually go mad or a put in asylums, where they cause even more trouble.”

Anna was unaware of her talent at the time, but the woman wasn’t. However, it didn’t stop Anna from sensing lies.

“You’re an idiot. There is no pact with the US government, and this is kidnapping. I WILL have you prosecuted when I get back!”

The woman dropped all pretense then and both the girls discovered how stern, powerful and domineering the sorceress was. In an instant, they both knew that she could and would destroy them if they did not do as she wished.

“I have brought you here as guests of honor, but since you refuse my hospitality, you will be kept as prisoners.”

As she said this, the seatbelts they were wearing tightened and pinned them to the seats. She continued. “and since you will not be trained, you will be tested. Yours is a new, unknown power.”

Anna had wished she could say so much more, but didn’t want to incite this sorceresses wrath. The next 2 hours were gruelingly long and silent. After studying them for a few minutes, the woman moved up to the front of the limo, to a second compartment, and sent another woman back. The seatbelts loosened, then unbuckled. The girls were again offered food and drinks. This time, they accepted some of it. They didn’t speak the whole time, rather thought to each other. Once the possibility of telepathy had been opened, they decided to try. However, it didn’t seem like a…connection. It just was. They just were. Together. This is how Anna had survived in this stale aired, ceramic and stone prison. Because no matter what the sorceress did, they always just were.
